ST. MARY'S CHURCH

The foundation stone of the St. Mary's church at Thengode under Angamali diocese, was laid in AD.1899 and its construction was completed in 1903. The first Holy Mass in the church was celebrated on the 1st day of the Malyalam month of Makaram (January 14) by the Kandanad diocesan Metropolitan Mor Ivanios Paulose Murimattathil.  The Holy Mooron consecration of the church was held in 1966 by the Catholicos Mor Baselios Augen I along with the diocesan Metropolitan Mor Gregorios Geevarghse Vayaliparambil and Mor Clemis Abraham (Knanaya Metropolitan).

In 1982 the church was reconstructed and the consecration ceremony of the renovated church was held by the Supreme head of the Church, Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka I Iwas, during His Holiness's first Apostolic visit to India. The Angamali diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Thomas Mor Dionysius (present Catholicos H.B. Baselios Thomas I) assisted His Holiness during this holy ceremony.

The main thronos of the church is dedicated in the name of Holy Virgin Mary.  The important festivities observed in the church are on January 14th (foundation day), February 13 (feast of Patriarch St. Elias III), May 6 (St. George day), July 16 and November 1st (feast of St. Gregorios Parumala).

On 31st October 1993, a piece of the Holy vestment used by St. Gregorios Chathuruthil (Parumala Thirumeni) was installed in a memorial Qabar room constructed adjacent to the Madbho in the north side. The installation ceremony was led by the late lamented Catholicos of the East Aboon Mor Baselios Paulose II and was assisted by the diocesan Metropolitan H.G. Thomas Mor Dionysius. The relic of St. Athanasius Paulose (a cap used by Valiya Thirumeni) was also installed later in the church.

Thengode St. Mary's church has 2 chapels in the names of Mor Kurikaose Sahdo and Patriarch St. Ignatius Elias III, and a cross in the name of Mor Geevarghese Sahdo (St. George). The church also has a big parish hall and an office complex named after St. Gregorios Geevarghese Chathuruthil (Parumala Thirumeni). Various activities of the Jacobite Syrian Sunday School, Marth Mariam Vanitha Samajam, Jacobite Syrian Youth Association etc. helps a great for the spiritual upliftment of the parishioners.
